Rhone-Alpes

The spectacular Alps dominate the region, both in summer and winter. The region is famous for its skiing, with some of the best ski resorts in the world, but non-skiers will also find plenty to do. Head to the spa town of Aix les Bains to take the waters, or follow the Beaujolais wine route along the Rhone.

The region is dotted with nature reserves and parks, so there are lots of opportunities to head to the outdoors.

For something completely different, visit Lyon, the capital of the Rhones-Alpes region. Lyon - named a world heritage site - is France’s second largest city. It has been an economic powerhouse for centuries, with its international trading links visible in the many architectural influences in the town. Visit the old centre, which has been refurbished and preserved, and take in the Musee des Beaux Arts.

Lyon is known as the centre of French gastronomy and is famous for its pork and sausages. Try salade lyonnaise, with lamb shanks and chicken livers and cervelas lyonnais, a brioche filled with sausage, truffles and pistachio nuts. Elsewhere in the region, try potato gratin savoyard, made with eggs, milk and local cheese.
