Provence-Alpes-Azur
This region really does have something for every traveller. The long Mediterranean coast of the French Riviera features the famous resorts of St Tropez and Cap Ferrat. Marseille has just celebrated its 2600th birthday and is today a cosmopolitan, lively city.
Inland from the coast, head to Avignon to see its famous bridge. Famous for its arts festival it has a lively cultural scene and impressive architecture, dating from its history as the alternative location of the papacy.
Nature lovers could follow the course of the Verdon river with its spectacular gorges. Or head to the Alps, ideal for winter sports as well as summer hiking.
The region produces the Cotes du Rhone appellation and its wine reputation has benefited from the renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Mediterranean influence on the cuisine means hot spices and lots of seafood. Garlic, olive oil and olives feature prominently as do goats cheeses and the flavour of herbes de Provence.
