Lorraine

Like its neighbour, Alsace, parts of Lorraine have been subject to contested ownership between France and Germany. Some Lorraine natives still speak a local dialect - Frankish - which is neither French nor German.

Springs enriched with salts and minerals from the Vosges Mountains have long been believed to have curative powers, hence the enduring popularity of spas such as Vittel.

The region is ideal for water lovers, with lakes galore and hundreds of miles of navigable waterways.

The region’s capital, Metz, is known for its yellow limestone architecture and its large number of parks. The St Etienne cathedral has stained glass windows by Marc Chagall.

The historic capital, Nancy, is the region’s other main city. It features many art nouveau buildings.

Lorraine’s most famous speciality is, of course, the Quiche Lorraine. The cuisine also features wild boar, venison and mushrooms - and beer drinkers will want to follow Lorraine’s beer route.
