Aquitaine
Aquitaine – together with the Pyrenees Atlantiques region of Spain – is home to the Basque people, with their unique language and customs. Despite being one of the most popular regions of France for British visitors, the good news is that Aquitaine is spacious enough that you won’t feel crowded out by tourists.
There’s a huge variety of natural attractions on offer. For water lovers, Aquitaine offers the choice of many miles of Atlantic coast and beach resorts – including Biarritz. Or you can head inland for a lazy trip down one of its rivers – the Lot perhaps.
Regional cuisine features eels, mussels and oysters from the coast, together with lamb and goat’s cheeses from inland. All complemented by the region’s famous Bordeaux wines – or followed by a local Cognac brandy.
