Corsica

An ancient craggy island in the Mediterranean, Corsica is quite unlike any other region of France. It has its own language, customs and a culture stretching back to pre-historic times.

The history of Corsica is evident in remains including Roman roads and ancient pre-historic dolmens or standing stones, many of which are carved with faces. Touring the island is an adventure in itself, with the varied quality of the roads. Outside the two cities of Ajaccio - the regional capital - and Bastia, Corsica is sparsely populated and wild.

The architecture of the island seems simple, but has hidden complexity - much like the people, who are intensely proud of their heritage. Music is central to the culture - particularly a uniquely Corsican form of a capella harmony.

Food production is small scale and seasonal, as befits such a sparsely populated island, with much of it organic.
