Burgundy

The Burgundy region has a rich heritage, born from its wealthy past. In medieval times, that wealth was used to create some of the world’s best Romanesque buildings at Vézelay, Fontenay and Cluny among others. All visitors should visit the great Abbey of Cluny, founded in 910, which was once one of the most powerful in Europe. Its former glories live on in the town’s buildings, many of which are decorated with remains taken from the Abbey.

Burgundy’s capital, Dijon, is remarkable. Climb to the top of the ancient Philippe le Bon tower for the best view of the historical centre, which includes both the Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy and the world renowned Musee des Beaux-Arts.

Burgundy’s food and wine is as rich as its past. Local specialities include coq au vin and beef bourguignon, while the wines of the region include Côte d'Or, Côte de Beaune and Châblis.
